Hemodialysis
- The Hemodialysis process involves the use of an ‘artificial kidney’ or dialyser using hemodialysis machine. This machine filters the chemicals and waste from the blood. In order for the blood to flow to the machine, a ‘vascular access’ will need to be created. This vascular access is an entrance to a blood vessel which can be used to connect the machine to you. The vascular access can be created through various ways:
- Connecting an artery to a vein in order to create a larger blood vessel. This is known as a fistula.
- Grafting an artery and a vein using a soft plastic tube.
- A thin plastic tube called double lumen catheter can be inserted into a large vein located in the groin or neck region to create a temporary access.
- Depending on the patient’s condition, dialysis may need to be performed for a longer or slightly shorter duration. The vascular access may be temporary or permanent.
- At the hemodialysis center, during each session, the patient is connected to the dialysis machine. Blood flows into the machine where the extra fluid and waste is removed from it and purified blood returns to the body.
